Born an afranchi (a free person of color) in Verrettes in 1781, she maries General Charles Belair, nephew of Toussaint Louverture. She became very active in the army, eventually rising to lieutenant during the Haitian’s revolution. She is referred to as the “Tigress of Haiti” for her bravery and fierceness.
In 2004, she was formally recognized by the Haitian Government as a National Heroine and was featured on the ten-gourd banknote.
